Event Recap: BookBuzz Toronto

Just over a week ago I was involved in an absolutely fabulous book event, BookBuzz Toronto. It’s taken me awhile to write this recap, in part, because I’m still in awe that it happened. (The other part is that I’ve been traveling all over the province and have also been hit with a cold.)

The sign that greeted us outside the bar.
BookBuzz started when authors Samantha Stroh Bailey, Meredith Schorr, and Francine LaSala decided to hold an event in New York City this past May during the week of Book Expo America (BEA). It was a hit so Sam, Lydia Laceby (author and fellow blogger), and I decided to bring the event north of the border. BookBuzz Toronto was born!

For the past few months, Sam, Lydia, and I were planning this event and trying to make it the best possible event it could be. This planning resulted in hundreds of emails and lots of little inside jokes. We picked venue pretty early on and settled on The Crest, a great bar on St. Clair West. I actually had to trust Sam and Lydia on this decision as I wasn’t able to get into the city to see the bar before the night of the event. They did a great job in securing this place because I think the décor and feel of the bar was perfect for what we were going for.

Chandeliers and brick. Love.
The fun part of planning this event was reaching out to authors to see who would want to attend. We were really lucky that the majority of the authors we talked to were so excited and were more than willing to take part. Yay! We had ten authors to promote and we were thrilled. The authors involved in BookBuzz Toronto were:

Back, from left: Lydia, me, Heather, Chantel
Front, from left: Romi, Meredith, Cat, Sam, Samantha, Kate
The majority of the authors were coming from the GTA but we had some traveling large distances to come to our event. (Even I live well out of the Toronto area.) Cat came from Montreal, Meredith from New York City, and Samantha March from Iowa. Francine is also from New York but a last minute family crisis kept her at home (we missed you, Francine!).

Being able to meet these authors was like a dream come true for me as these ladies have written some of my favourite books. If you’re reading this you’re probably a huge book lover like me so you can understand what it’s like to be able to meet some of your favourite authors at one event. Amazing. I have to admit that I’m quite proud of myself for being involved in an event that brought all of these authors together for others to enjoy as well (though there’s no way I could have done it without Sam and Lydia!).

From left: Cat, Meredith, Samantha, Chantel, Me, Heather
Since I have an events background, I prepared myself for something to go wrong (Murphy’s Law!) but we were so lucky that the little snags were incredibly minor. The biggest thing that affected me was trying to get to the venue on time. Lots of traveling that day (I had picked up Samantha at the Buffalo airport) and brutal traffic had us getting to the venue with only about a half hour to spare. But, like I said, there were only minor issues and we all sighed with relief at the end of the night when we realized nothing major went wrong and everyone seemed to have a great time. Woo!

I wanted to incorporate a bit of a formal element to the mix and mingle event and have all the authors be introduced and explain what the night was all about. That translated into me, the only non-author involved, having to do the speech and pronounce everyone’s names. I don’t do public speaking if I can help it but I squared my shoulders, drank a delicious Pink Stiletto (or two) and braved the microphone. I think it went well but I was definitely able to breathe a little easier after that part was over!

Our signature drink, the Pink Stiletto. Yum.
My other job was to help Kathryn, my fellow blogger at Novel Escapes, with the book sale table. I am so incredibly grateful that she was there because I found myself away from the table more often than not. She was a superstar! We were both lucky that we had read the majority of the books for sale and we could confidently recommend them to anyone looking to purchase a book…or two, or three. They were only $10! I actually bought quite a few myself as Christmas presents for my girlfriends. I’m so glad they read! I had my favourite titles, of course, but I don’t think anyone could go wrong with any of the books we had for sale.

I want to give a shout out to our awesome sponsors. The week before the event NOW Magazine put an ad in their magazine for us and The Crest was a huge help to us as well. Their food was fabulous (from what I was told…I honestly didn’t eat much!) and I loved what they did with our Pink Stilettos (pink lemonade and vodka in a sugar rimmed champagne glass with a raspberry garnish…yum!). Huge thanks go out to our main sponsors Kobo Writing Life (they even donated a Kobo to be given away!) and Wattpad. We couldn’t have had this event without their support!

There’s so much more I can say about this event but I don’t even know where to start. Like I said, I’m still in awe that I was able to meet these ladies in person. We made the most of our time together though and a few of us went out for brunch the next day and did some wandering around the city. Well, more talking and less wandering, to be honest! I was also tasked with showing Samantha Niagara Falls (I live in St. Catharines and she’d never been to Canada before, let alone the Falls, so she stayed with me on Friday) and I loved being able to see her face as she witnessed the awesomeness that is Niagara Falls. I also have to say that I am so happy that my mom and sister made the trek to the event. They live a couple of hours north of the city and did not have to come but they did and I’m so glad. My sister was actually the one who took the majority of the pictures you see in this post!

Left: I can't believe I actually spoke at the event. Ack! :)
Right: Lindsey from Random House of Canada stopped by!
Sadly, though, the event had to come to an end, we had to say goodbye, and we had to go back to our regular lives. It’s almost harder to have a purely virtual relationship with these authors since we’ve now met in person. We’re all hopeful that we can meet up again in NYC in May during BEA and for another edition of BookBuzz (keep your fingers crossed that I get a job as I want to spend my birthday in New York!). Until then, we’ll have to settle for email and social media and for reading their fabulous books.

Favourites with Samantha Stroh Bailey

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

Today is the last favourites interview! I'm ending with my other co-organizer of the event, the fabulous Samantha Stroh Bailey. I loved her novel Finding Lucas and was so excited to meet her when we started planning this event. When I finally did get to meet her we laughed at how extreme our height difference is (I tower over her!) but the height doesn't matter when you're sitting down, drinking cocktails, and chatting about books! I'm so excited to see her again this week for the event! It's just a couple days away now...will you be there?

About Samantha...
Co-founder of BookBuzz, Samantha Stroh Bailey has been a writer ever since she could pick up a pen. In fact, she even sent her first manuscript, Freddy the Flame, to publishers when she was ten years old. Sadly, it was rejected, but a lifelong passion to write was born.
A published author and journalist, she is also a professional writer/editor and owns Perfect Pen Communications. Her work has appeared in Now Magazine, The Village Post, Oxford University Press, Abilities Magazine, Kobo Writing Life and many other publications, and she was one of Kobo Writing Life’s writers-in-residence at BEA 2013. Samantha also has a Master of Education in Applied Linguistics that looks great on her wall. Okay, in a box in her basement. She lives in Toronto with her husband and two children. Finding Lucas is her first novel.

Favourites...
Movie - One of my all-time favorite movies (and books) is The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Raw, powerful, smart and incredibly intense, the film has an unbelievable cast with Daniel Day Lewis, Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin and some of the most memorable scenes ever shot.
Chick flick - Ooh, this is a hard one. I’m going to have to say Love, Actually. That scene with the little boy on the drums makes me bawl every time I see it. (Blogger Note: I love this movie! That actor is just the sweetest thing.)
Alcoholic beverage - Gin and tonic, with lemon. Never lime.
Warm beverage - Coffee, always and forever.
Junk food - Chips. Ooh, especially ketchup.
TV show - This is a toss up between Friends and Sex and the City. I could watch reruns of both shows for hours, days actually, and they both have the best and most unforgettable ensemble casts.
Author - I cannot possibly name my favorite author because there are so many I admire. But, Jennifer Weiner is my idol, and I would read a grocery list if she wrote it.
Actress - I have recently developed a serious affection for Rebel Wilson. I first saw her in Bridesmaids, and I’ve been watching Super Fun Night. I think she is clever, hilarious and very relatable.
Band - I know that this is going to convey a very different impression of me, but three of my favorite bands are Nine Inch Nails, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sublime. I like loud and dirty sometimes.
Pet - Oh, I miss the dogs I’ve had. I definitely want to get another one and will when my kids are old enough to help me clean up after them. They say seven; I say twelve.
Board game - Scrabble!

Favourites with Meredith Schorr

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

Author Meredith Schorr will probably win the honour of being the author of my favourite book of 2013. I freaking loved Blogger Girl - so much so that I plan on buying my very own paperback copy at the event so I can get it signed and keep it forever. Meredith is another of the co-founders of BookBuzz and will be traveling to our event from New York City. I can't wait to meet her!

About Meredith...
A born and bred New Yorker, Meredith Schorr discovered her passion for writing when she began to enjoy drafting work-related emails way more than she was probably supposed to, and was famous among her friends for writing witty birthday cards. After trying her hand writing children’s stories and blogging her personal experiences, Meredith found her calling writing “real” chick lit for real women.  When she is not hard at work on her current work in progress, Meredith spends her days as a trademark paralegal.  She is a loyal New York Yankees fan and an avid runner.  Meredith is the author of three published novels, Just Friends with Benefits, A State of Jane and Blogger Girl and is a co-founder of Book Buzz.

Favourites...
Chick flick – When Harry Met Sally – I will never get tired of watching it. Following closely behind are Bridget Jones’s Diary and 13 Going on 30.
Alcoholic beverage – I go through phases but currently my favorite is Prosecco.
Warm beverage – I couldn’t survive without coffee but for taste alone, I would go with chai latte.
Junk food – Does cheese count? I could possibly live on cheese and crackers. I’m not much of a traditional junk food addict.
TV show – Way too difficult to choose just one as I am a television whore big-time! My current favorites include The Following, Revenge, Criminal Minds, Castle, Parenthood and The Mindy Project, but former favorites include Felicity, Sex and the City, Beverly Hills 90210, Fringe and, of course, The Brady Bunch J.
Store – Barnes & Noble. I am a book geek and would rather browse through books than racks of clothing.
Travel destination – Key West, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; and San Francisco, California are my favorite U.S. destinations as I’ve only been to Europe twice and didn’t fall in love with either country. I would love to go to Italy. Hoping Toronto makes the list soon!
Ice cream flavour – oreo mint chocolate chip
Sports team/athlete/sport – New York Yankees/Mariano Rivera/baseball – kind of a sad time for me since a) the Yankees sucked this year b) Mo retired and c) the Red Sox are in the World Series L (Blogger Note: a) Boo Yankees! ;) b) that is sad…he is amazing and c) down with the Red Sox!)
Author – Although I think so many authors are fantastic, in order to call one a “favorite”, I would have to have read at least three or four books which leaves out authors who have only published one or two books so far. I’m going to go with Sophie Kinsella since she’s my chick lit “crush” and I loved each and every one of her books with the exception of Wedding Night which I thought was a bit too silly even for her.
Band – Maroon 5, The Rolling Stones, U2, The Beatles, The Eagles, Fleetmac Mac – I’m old school!
Animal – Dog – my favorite is the Golden Retriever. My sister’s dog, Gypsy, passed away this year and she was a Golden Retriever. Our family misses her terribly.
Book boyfriend – I read about two books a week and while I have fallen in love with many book heroes, I am quite fickle and move on quickly. My current book boyfriend is Nicholas Strong from my own Blogger Girl.
Board game – I used to love to play the board game Life when I was younger. It’s crazy that the highest paid profession in the game was “doctor” and the salary was only $25,000. Times sure have changed.

Favourites with Samantha March

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

As much as I can't wait to meet all the authors at BookBuzz Toronto, I have to admit I'm most excited to meet Samantha March. I honestly never thought I'd get the chance to meet her since we live so far apart (she in Iowa, me in Ontario) which was such a bummer because we've become so close over the past few years through our blogs and her novels. Samantha runs the popular blog Chick Lit Plus, her own publishing company Marching Ink, and is the author of two novels, Destined to Fail and The Green Ticket, with a third one on the way. Talk about being busy! I'm glad she's squeezing us into her schedule and making her way to Canada!

About Samantha...
Samantha March is an author, editor, publisher, blogger, and all around book lover. She runs the popular book/women’s lifestyle blog ChickLitPlus, which keeps her bookshelf stocked with the latest reads and up to date on all things health, fitness, fashion, and celebrity related. In 2011 she launched her independent publishing company Marching Ink and her debut novel Destined to Fail. When she isn’t reading, writing, or blogging, you can find her cheering for the Green Bay Packers.

Favourites...
Movie - Clueless or Legally Blonde
Alcoholic beverage - Flavored vodka, particularly cherry or grape with lemonade
Warm beverage - Hot chocolate – with marshmallows!
Junk food - Chips...my weakness

Favourites with Romi Moondi

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

Romi Moondi is one of the funniest authors I've read. Her novels are always hilarious and the story is so good. Her series includes Year of the Chick (free!), Last-Minute Love, and, the latest, Never or Forever. I still haven't read her newest one but I can't wait to see what it's all about.

About Romi...
Romi Moondi is a Canadian author who converted her 2008 blog “Year of the Chick” into novel form, and published it in 2011. Since then she’s added two more books to the “Year of the Chick” series, the most recent of which is “Never or Forever.” The latest book takes place in Paris, which is where Romi lived for six months this past year, after trading in her corporate job for an inspiration-seeking mission.
The books can be described as edgy romantic comedies, where happy endings are not a guarantee, but where real and embarrassing moments are in good supply.
Romi also writes screenplays in her spare time, and her screenplay “Best Before” made it to the semi-finals or better in eight international screenplay competitions in 2011.
She’d like to see her books adapted into films one day, with the crown jewel of Canada a.k.a. Ryan Gosling as one of the male leads. Naturally.

Favourites...
Movie - It’s so hard to pick one, so here’s a few I love: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 500 Days of Summer, and Before Sunset
Chick flick - Again, it’s hard to narrow it down so I’ll say: Love Actually, Bridget Jones’s Diary, You’ve Got Mail and Serendipity (Blogger Note: I love all these too. Romi, can we have a movie date?)
Alcoholic beverage - After living in Paris...it’s gotta be champagne!
Warm beverage - hot chocolate, particularly viennois hot chocolate in Paris
Junk food - Doritos
TV show - there’s no way I can narrow this down, so: Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, 30 Rock, and Parks and Recreation
Travel destination - from what I’ve seen so far, Switzerland, and also New York, forever New York!
Ice cream flavour - Rocky Road
Sports team -Toronto Maple Leafs, of course!
Actor - Ryan Gosling, and Leonardo Dicaprio
Book boyfriend - Mark Darcy all the way!

Favourites with Lydia Laceby

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

Today you get to learn about one of my favourite bookish ladies: Lydia Laceby. Lydia is one of the other organizers of BookBuzz Toronto and it's been SO great working with her. I also write for Lydia's blog, Novel Escapes, and have thoroughly enjoyed her debut novel Redesigning Rose. We've known each other for almost two years now (crazy!) and I'm so proud of her for publishing her book. Enjoy her favourites!

About Lydia...
Lydia Laceby is the co-founder of Novel Escapes, a chick lit and contemporary women’s fiction review website. Since 2009, she has read and reviewed as much women’s fiction as humanly possible while designing, organizing and expanding the website from two reviewers to seven.
In her spare time, she knits cute baby hats, would pick cheese over chocolate–if she had to choose–and regularly cheats on her allergy free diet.
Lydia has always wanted to write and began her career writing a soap opera at the tender age of thirteen. It never aired. Redesigning Rose is her first novel.

Favourites...
Movie - Braveheart and The Last of the Mohicans. I guess I’m a sucker for historic, romantic, violent movies.
Chick flick - Bridget Jones’s Diary and Sex and the City (the first one - I don’t even want to talk about the second movie)
Alcoholic beverage - Vodka soda.  Raspberry vodka is best.
Warm beverage - Tea
Junk food - Salty: Chips of any flavour. Sweet: Reese’s peanut butter cups
Dessert - I don’t really eat dessert unless it’s a special occasion. I suppose I’m a bit odd. If I had to choose, I’d pick a pie. Again, any flavor. Great. Thanks, Kaley. Now I want pie. (Blogger note: *smiles angelically*)
TV show - This is not a fair question. The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Parenthood, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother… Shall I go on?
Travel destination - Anywhere that isn’t home. I love exploring and would love to venture out to see more of the world!
Ice cream flavour - Peanut butter and chocolate
Sport - Hockey. Yep, I’m a good Canadian girl. I also grew up with two little brothers whose games I rarely missed.
Actor - Johnny Depp – because he’s such an incredible actor. It has nothing at all to do with his looks. Nope, nothing at all. Nor the fact that his Teen Beat posters were plastered all over my wall during his 21 Jump Street days or that he’s been my imaginary boyfriend for over two decades. Nope. Not at all. Seriously though, it helps that he’s such an incredible actor. For real.
Animal - Wolf
Pet - Dog! I can’t wait to get another pup again soon!

Favourites with Cat Lavoie

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

Today I'm featuring Cat Lavoie. Cat's debut novel, Breaking the Rules, was one of my favourite books of 2012 and I cannot wait to read Zoey & The Moment of Zen (released yesterday!).

About Cat...
Cat Lavoie lives in Montreal, Canada with her tempestuous cat, Abbie. Her debut novel, Breaking the Rules, was published in August 2012 by Marching Ink. If Cat isn't reading or writing, she's most likely watching too much TV or daydreaming about her next trip to London. Her second novel, Zoey & the Moment of Zen, will be released by Marching Ink in October 2013.

Favourites...
Chick flick - Love, Actually
Warm beverage - English Breakfast Tea
Junk food - Lays Salt & Vinegar potato chips
TV show - I'm a TV addict so I have a million favourite TV shows, but right now it would be The Paradise. The first season is currently airing on PBS and the second season will air soon on BBC. I'm in love with that show!
Store - My name is Cat and I'm a shopaholic. Amazon and Sephora are my biggest weaknesses.
Travel destination - London! It's my favourite city. I'd also like to visit Scotland and Ireland.
Ice cream flavour - Peanut Butter Cup
Sports team/sport - Love hockey, especially the Montreal Canadiens! Go HABS (Blogger note: I'm a Leafs fan, basically just because I've lived closest to Toronto my whole life, but I'll let this one slide, Cat ;) )
Song - Too many favorites to pick just one, but I just rediscovered the song "Nothing Ever Hurt Like You" by James Morrison and I've been playing it on repeat for the last few days. So good!
Pet - Abbie the Cat! She's awesome.
Book boyfriend - Jude Weatherington from Daydreamer by Brea Brown.
Board game - Scrabble, although I am HORRIBLE at it!

Favourites with Heather Wardell

I started this "favourites" feature because I wanted a way for readers to get to know the authors attending BookBuzz Toronto, an event I'm helping with. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these amazing women and I hope you can attend the event! Learn more about BookBuzz Toronto here.

First up is author Heather Wardell. She's the author of thirteen novels, twelve of which are included in her Toronto series. You can download her first novel, Life, Love, and a Polar Bear Tattoo, for free! (And you should...it's excellent!)

About Heather...
Growing up, I was an avid (rabid?) reader. I am a natural speed reader, regularly clocked at about 1200 wpm (I read Harry Potter 5 in just under three hours), and always have several books on the go, nearly all in e-book form on my Kindle.
I have always made up stories in my head, but never considered becoming a writer. Instead, I intended to be a high school music teacher. I was sidetracked by my enjoyment of my psychology courses in university, and ended up with a psychology degree with a concentration in computer science.
This took me to a major Canadian bank as a software developer. I stayed there for just over four years, and then went back to school to become an elementary school teacher. After four years teaching elementary school computer science, I took up the National Novel Writing Month challenge and attempted to write a novel in a month.
I succeeded, and the first draft of "Life, Love, and a Polar Bear Tattoo" was the result. I realized I love writing. I left teaching, and I haven't looked back since!
In my non-writing time, I read, run, swim, crochet, take care of my 55 gallon aquarium and my cat Trinity, and play drums and clarinet. Generally not all at once.

Favourites...
Movie - Hot Fuzz (brilliantly filmed, a great story, and hilarious)
Chick flick - Bridget Jones's Diary
Alcoholic beverage - pina colada
Warm beverage - whole-milk latte (just espresso and milk - delicious!)
Junk food - dark chocolate, the darker the better
Dessert - 'hof dessert' (not sure of spelling!) - this was apparently the favorite of some Danish king and my half-Danish mother serves it every year at Christmas - baked meringues topped with whipped cream and melted chocolate. SO GOOD. Insanely rich. Wouldn't be Christmas without it.
Store - Chapters-Indigo (or Barnes and Noble when I'm in the States)
Travel destination - New York City, specifically Manhattan - there's an energy there I feel nowhere else! I spent a month there in 2012 and two weeks in 2013 and I would move there in a heartbeat.
Ice cream flavour - mint chocolate chip
Author - Marian Keyes
Song - Jason Aldean's "Only Way I Know" - such a great "head down and get 'er done" message, plus I love singing along and copying his country twang
Band - Meat Loaf - I love his over-the-top energy and the way he does his own thing
Animal - given that my first book is "Life, Love, and a Polar Bear Tattoo" and every book since has included the words 'polar bear' at least once, I'd have to say... squirrel. (Blogger note: This totally cracked me up! Heather, you are too funny!)
Book boyfriend - the guy (whose name I've forgotten!) from Sophie Kinsella's "Remember Me". Such a great book and such a sweet guy!

Book Buzz Toronto

For the past few months I've been working with authors Lydia Laceby and Samantha Stroh Bailey on planning an awesome bookish event: Book Buzz Toronto! This event will feature a number of fabulous women's fiction authors and we're SO EXCITED!

Does this sound familar? Some of you might recall that there was an NYC event this past May. It was a hit (from what I've been told...I wasn't able to attend the event. Boohoo!) and we decided we wanted to bring it to Canada!

You can find all the details on the Book Buzz Toronto site, along with bios of every attending author, but I'll give you the rundown here, too:

Thursday November 7
7-9pm
The Crest - 794 St. Clair West, Toronto
Free cocktail
Free snacks
Great book deals and the chance to get them signed!

I'm also pumped at the line up we have for this event. I never imagined that I'd ever get to meet some of these ladies!

Cat Lavoie
Chatel Guertin
Francine LaSala
Heather Wardell
Kate Hilton
Lydia Laceby
Meredith Schorr
Romi Moondi
Samantha Stroh Bailey
Samantha March

So what do you say, are you in? It's a free event, you get a free drink, and the chance to meet some amazing authors. What's not to love? RSVP to bookbuzz2013 AT gmail DOT com. Hope to see you there!
